The Palace of Abstinence

The Palace of Abstinence, also called” Lesser Imperial Palace”, was where the emperor prepared himself in abstinence before he offered sacrifices at important ceremonies. It is a closed city, surrounded by double enclosing walls and to moats, known as the Imperial Ditch. The inner moat is in shape of “U” character. As the defensive structure, the moats were filled with water in the past.
The main buildings in the Palace of Abstinence are the main hall, rest hall, bell tower, watch house, and so on. All of them face east and are covered with green glazed tiles, showing the supreme statue of the heavenly god and emperor’s greatest respect to him.
